DONATE YOUR BRAIN WAVES TO SCIENCE!

Validating Sensory Processing Disorders
Department of Occupational Therapy
Colorado State University

Purpose of this study: This is a research study to examine if we can consistently measure how young children (ages 5 to 10 years) respond to repeated sounds and other sensory information, such as touch, smell and movement. In addition, we are trying to determine if children with sensory processing disorders, such as Asperger syndrome/high functioning autism, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), show different brain activity to sensory stimuli than children without disorders.

Where: Brainwaves Research Lab at Colorado State University in Gifford Building room 304.

Supporting UNIQUE BRILLIANCE in children with learning differences and/or social & emotional challenges. A wholesome approach to play therapy for children, adolescents & families

We have ongoing social skills play therapy groups, ages 7-9 and 9-12; group size limited. Individual play therapy and sandplay have been shown to be effective in addressing a more psychodynamic and attuned approach to building social reciprocity in children with HFA and Asperger's Syndrome. Can work very well in tandem with ABA treatment.

LENA Foundation Offers Language Environment Assessment Equipment

The LENA Foundation is looking for local families who have a child diagnosed with ASD, between the ages of 18-48 months to use their home language assessment system , for free, (requires Microsoft XP or Vista) and provide feedback about their experience. The amount of time required for committing to this study is minimal. There are three main steps for using the system:

  1. The LENA Digital Language Processor (DLP) fits into the pocket of specially designed clothing, which will be provide to you. In the morning, turn the unit on, place it in the pocket and dress your child. Go about your day as you normally would.
  2. At the end of the day, plug the LENA Digital Language Processor into your PC. The sophisticated language environment analysis software processes the DLP data to measure language environment and development of your child.
  3. View your reports in the privacy of your own home. We do not have access to your data or any of the recordings. Once the recording is processed it is automatically deleted from you computer by the software.

There is equipment for only 10 families in this study; the systems will be allocated on a first-come basis.

The requirements for receiving the LENA Home System are:

  • Completing four short questionnaires, sent weekly, upon installation of your system.
  • One phone interview at the end of 4 weeks of use (approximately 10 minutes).

Please contact Mia Moe at miamoe@lenafoundation.org or 303-545-9696 if you are interested in participating.

Assisted Cycling Tours

Assisted Cycling Tours is recruiting Riders to Promote the Abilities of People with Disabilities

Assisted Cycling Tours is recruiting participants for several riding events around the state of Colorado including the MS 150, Ride the Rockies, Elephant Rock and Ride to Victory. They are seeking people with and without disabilities to ride together as a team in these events.

"We are looking for people who want to ride as part of a team and help out a person with a disability as well as be part of a great cause", said Bob Matter, Executive Director of Assisted Cycling Tours. "Since most of our equipment today is adapted tandems, we are looking for both captains of the tandems as well as individuals to ride on the back of them. Our bikes work well for people who may have trouble balancing alone or just can ride a bike independently for whatever reason."

For each of the rides that focus on a specific disability, ACT would like to have a team specifically geared to that disability, though it is not absolutely necessary. We would love to have a team of riders with MS for the MS 150 and a team of riders with Parkinson Disease for the Road to Victory Matter said. Ultimately, our goal is to serve any person with a disability from any injury, disease or syndrome and get them on bikes.

ACT has a limited number of slots per event, and there is some minor criteria that goes along with being a team member. All riders will receive a custom print jersey designed specifically for ACT. To participate as either a biker or volunteer, you can contact the organization at info@assistedcyclingtours.org.
